PACKING & GEAR

What to Pack for Ladakh, Spiti & High Passes

Above 4,000m the temperature can swing 25°C in a single day. Pack for four seasons in one ride.

EXPERT CHECKLIST
Thermal base layers, a fleece mid-layer and a windproof outer — even in July.
Sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen; UV is brutal at altitude.
Lip balm, moisturiser and eye drops — thin air cracks skin fast.

High-altitude riding breaks the normal rules of packing. On a single day in Ladakh or Spiti you can start below freezing at dawn, bake under fierce UV by noon, and get soaked in a hail shower by afternoon. You're not packing for a season — you're packing for all of them, every day.

The layering kit (non-negotiable)

  • Thermal base layers — merino wool is best, as it stays warm even when damp
  • A fleece or light down mid-layer
  • A windproof, waterproof outer shell

Skin and sun — most riders underestimate this

  • High-SPF sunscreen and an SPF lip balm — UV above 4,000m burns even in the cold
  • Sunglasses or a tinted visor
  • Moisturiser and eye drops for the bone-dry air

Small things that save the trip

A buff or balaclava, a spare pair of gloves, hand warmers for the highest days, a headtorch, and a reusable water bottle or hydration bladder.

Our tip: Everything you need for warmth and weather protection should be within easy reach without opening the van. On a Ladakh motorcycle tour or Spiti Valley expedition, our Ride Marshals set a steady pace that lets you layer up or down as temperatures change at every pass.
