Nepal: The Upper Mustang Odyssey

Day 01 : Arrival in Kathmandu

Your Nepal adventure bike tour starts the moment you land at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. Our team will greet you at the airport and escort you to your hotel in the heart of the city. Once you check in, you’ll be welcomed with a refreshing welcome drink as you settle in and take your first moments to absorb the views of the Kathmandu Valley and the distant Himalayan skyline, setting the tone for the journey ahead.

In the afternoon, we gather for a detailed tour briefing—an essential part of adventure motorcycle touring in Nepal. You’ll be introduced to your Tour Manager and fellow riders, and during the orientation session, you’ll gain a clear understanding of the route, safety protocols, and terrain expectations. After motorcycle allocation, riders will take their bikes out for a short familiarization ride, allowing you to get comfortable before the expedition truly begins.

We conclude the day with a traditional Nepali dinner, followed by an engaging cultural dance performance. It’s the perfect opportunity to connect with fellow riders, experience local culture, and prepare mentally for the adventure ahead. Rest well tonight—because tomorrow the adventure begins.

Day 02 : Kathmandu - Nuwakot -  Gorkha (180 KM | 6-7 Hrs)

After breakfast, we gear up and begin an exciting day of riding as part of your Kathmandu adventure trip. The morning starts with saying goodbye to the city, gradually climbing towards the historic town of Nuwakot. This region is known for its hilltop views, traditional Newari architecture, and centuries-old forts.

From Nuwakot, the ride becomes more adventurous as the road starts to change in character. Smooth tarmac slowly gives way to patchy mountain roads and dusty off-road stretches as we move towards Bidur. This section introduces you to light gravel, winding downhill curves, and narrow ridgelines that make your Kathmandu bike tour both thrilling and technical.

The journey continues towards Aarughat, one of the most exciting stretches of the day. This part brings real adventure riding — rough dirt tracks, river-side trails, broken mountain roads, and multiple stream crossings depending on the season.

As we reach Gorkha, feel the calm atmosphere and historic charm of the city. After check-in, relax and enjoy a hearty dinner.

  • Accomodation: 3 * Hotel
  • Meals: Breakfast, and Dinner
Day 03 : Gorkha - Sundar Bazar - Pokhara (125KM | 4-5 Hrs)

After breakfast, we gear up, continuing the excitement of your Gorkha bike adventure. Today’s ride takes us through peaceful village roads, offering a true off-beat riding experience. We rode a thrilling 12 km downhill stretch, enjoying cool mountain air before heading towards Palungtar.

After about an hour of riding, we reach this small town Palungtar, where the surroundings are dominated by fields, greenery, and simple village life. From here, the ride becomes more engaging as we head towards Sundar Bazar, a charming hill town where we might stop for a refreshing tea break.

Post Sundar Bazar, the trail becomes more adventurous. This section truly reflects the soul of the Gorkha riding trails, featuring twisting mountain roads, off-road patches and dirt tracks. If time permits, we stop at Begnas Lake for Lunch, sharing moments beside its crystal-clear waters. A short 40-minute ride brings us into the lively lakeside area of Pokhara.

Pokhara welcomes you with its crystal-clear lakes, magnificent views of the Annapurna Mountain Range. After check-in, relax in your room and share stories of ride with your fellow riders.

  • Accomodation: 4 * Hotel
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Day 04 : Pokhora - Kalopani (105 KM | 4-5 Hrs)

After breakfast, we begin today’s thrilling Pokhara motorcycle journey, leaving the calm lakeside of Pokhara. The morning ride follows scenic mountain highways, offering spectacular views of snow-capped peaks. These smooth initial stretches are perfect for warming up before the adventure intensifies.

As we ride towards Beni, the landscape becomes more dramatic. Here, we take a short break and experience the thrill of walking across one of Nepal’s iconic suspension bridges (Mangala Ghat Bridge), hanging high above the rushing river below. This is one of the most memorable highlights of your Pokhara biking roads experience.

As we gradually climb through the legendary Kali Gandaki Gorge — the deepest gorge in the world — towering rock walls and raw mountain beauty surround you on both sides. By late afternoon, we reach the peaceful village of Kalopani, a remote Himalayan settlement known for its dramatic views and mountain silence.

After check-in, the rest of the day is free to relax or explore the village. Tonight, you’ll sleep surrounded by the sounds of the mighty Himalayas.

  • Accomodation: Guest House
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Day 05 : Kalopani - Samar (125 KM | 5-6 Hrs)

After breakfast, we start another adventurous day of riding as part of your Kalopani adventure trip. Today’s Kalopani mountain ride follows the mighty Kali Gandaki River, taking us deeper into Nepal’s trans-Himalayan landscape.

The ride begins by passing beautiful mountain villages like Dana, Ghasa, and Tukuche, where traditional stone houses, prayer flags, and quiet village life line the trail. Along the way, you are treated to breathtaking views of Mt. Dhaulagiri(8167m), Tukuche Peak(6920m), and Nilgiri(7061m), towering dramatically above the valley. As we pass through Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, the scenery changes dramatically — from lush green forests to dry, wind-carved, desert-like terrain.

The route towards Jomsom becomes increasingly rugged. You’ll ride past apple orchards and scattered settlements, feeling the air grow thinner and the landscapes more extreme — a natural part of high-altitude acclimatization.

As we reach the outskirts of Kagbeni, the official entry point to the restricted Upper Mustang region, permits are checked at the police checkpoint. After completing formalities, the ride turns northeast towards Chhuksang village.

Continuing through Geling, the trail runs alongside the dark waters of the Kali Gandaki River. In Chele, you’ll witness natural river tunnels carved through the rock — a rare and striking sight. Once you arrive at the quiet mountain settlement of Samar, check into accommodation provided.

  • Accomodation: Guest House
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Day 06 : Samar - Lo Manthang (125 KM | 2-3 Hrs)

After breakfast, we begin today’s ride as part of your Samar adventure ride, following rugged high-altitude trails deeper into the heart of Upper Mustang. The Samar bike trail today delivers a perfect mix of dusty off-road tracks, rocky climbs, and wide open plateaus, surrounded by dramatic desert-like Himalayan landscapes.

After lunch, we continue our ride toward one of the most legendary destinations in Nepal – Lo Manthang. Lo Manthang served as the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Mustang, also known as the Kingdom of Lo or “Upper Mustang.” Founded in 1380 by Ame Pal, the city is famous for its massive mud-brick walls and centuries-old monasteries that still stand strong today. The monarchy officially ended in October 2008 by order of the Nepali government. The last king, Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista, belongs to a royal lineage that dates back more than 25 generations. The region is home to the ethnic Lhoba community, preserving ancient traditions and Tibetan-influenced culture.

By late afternoon, we arrived at the walled city of Lo Manthang. After checking into the accommodation, the rest of the evening is free for you to this once-forbidden kingdom. Tonight, rest under star-filled Himalayan skies in one of the most remote and mystical places on Earth.

  • Accomodation: Standard Hotel
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Day 07 : Lo Manthang local exploration (50 KM | 4-5 Hrs)

After an early breakfast, we prepare for a full day of exploration as part of your Lo Manthang adventure ride. Today is dedicated to discovering the hidden wonders surrounding this ancient Himalayan kingdom, riding along the fascinating Lo Manthang trail.

We begin with a ride towards Chhoser, where permits are checked at the local post. If permission is granted, we continue riding towards the Tibetan border region. If not, we stop for tea and continue the adventure by visiting one of the most mysterious sites in Upper Mustang – the legendary Jhong Caves at Chhoser.

After this, we ride back to Lo Manthang, where we begin exploring the cultural heart of the city. The sacred Champa Lakhang (God House) is home to a massive 45-foot statue of Maitreya, the future Buddha. We also explore the red-walled Thubchen Gompa, famous for its large images of Sakyamuni, Avalokitesvara, and Maitreya, belonging to the Sakya sect and home to resident monks. These monasteries, locally referred to as “tegi,” are believed to have been built around 1420.

After a full day of exploration, we return to our  accommodation in Lo Manthang for rest and a peaceful night in this timeless Himalayan kingdom.

  • Accomodation: Standard Hotel
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Day 08 : Lo Manthang - Muktinath (100 KM | 5-6Hrs)

After breakfast, we begin the return leg of the adventure. Today’s ride is a rewarding mix of challenge and scenery as we backtrack towards Kagbeni, following the same rugged paths that brought us into the forbidden kingdom. A scenic lunch stop is planned along the way, giving you time to rest and refuel before the climb continues.

By midday, we reach Kagbeni (2,840 m), the ancient gateway to Upper Mustang. Kagbeni is dominated by its striking red monastery, despite its rustic charm, the village offers modern amenities and holds deep spiritual importance. The monastery here belongs to the Gelug (Yellow Hat) sect, and visitors are allowed entry with a legitimate fee that helps support the local school and community.

At Kagbeni, we complete the formal restricted area permit check-out, officially exiting the Upper Mustang zone. After this, we begin the climb towards Muktinath, a ride of around an hour that is considered one of the most thrilling and demanding stretches of the journey.

Riding across the high desert plateau, we finally reach Muktinath — the sacred “Place of Salvation.” After checking into the accommodation, the rest of the day is free to relax, explore the peaceful surroundings or simply enjoy the mountain silence under a sky full of stars.

  • Accomodation: 3 * Hotel
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Day 09 : Muktinath - Tatopani (175 KM | 6-7 Hrs)

Before breakfast, we begin the day with a spiritual start by visiting the sacred Muktinath Temple. This ancient Vishnu shrine holds deep importance for both Hindus and Buddhists and is located in the Muktinath Valley. At an altitude of around 3,800 meters, it is one of the highest temples in the world. Known as Mukti Kshetra in Hindu tradition, it symbolizes salvation and liberation, while Buddhists revere it as Chumig Gyatsa — the “Hundred Sacred Waters.”

After returning from the temple, we enjoy breakfast and then begin today’s thrilling Muktinath bike journey as we ride downhill through breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. This section of the Muktinath motorcycle route takes us past rugged mountain roads and into the ancient village of Kagbeni, before continuing on to Jomsom, a windy mountain town surrounded by barren cliffs and wide riverbeds.

At Jomsom, necessary paperwork is completed before we continue riding towards Marpha. Marpha is famous for its apple orchards, locally made apple brandy, and traditional Thakali culture. We take time to walk through the village, visit the local monastery, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere.

After exploring Marpha, we continue the journey toward Tatopani, riding for several more hours through winding mountain roads. By late afternoon, we reach Tatopani. The name Tatopani literally means “hot water,” and the natural hot springs here are the perfect place to relax tired muscles after days of intense riding.

  • Accomodation: 3 * Hotel
  • Meals: Breakfast and Dinner
Day 10 : Tatopani - Bandipur (180 KM | 5-6 Hrs)

After breakfast, we begin our Tatopani adventure ride, leaving behind the hot springs and mountain silence. Today’s Tatopani bike trail is a rewarding transition from rough mountain terrain to smoother, scenic highways.

We start by descending towards Beni, enjoying the relief of smoother stretches after some of the toughest off-road sections of the journey. As we pass through Jaleswor, we take a quick refreshment stop, then we continue following the river trail until we reach the main highway at Maldhunga.

The ride becomes faster and more relaxed towards Pokhara, covering this stretch in a couple of hours while enjoying wide mountain views and open landscapes. At the main junction near Pokhara, we continue along the Kathmandu–Pokhara highway.

After reaching Dumre Bazaar, we turn uphill and begin a scenic 9 km climb that leads us to the beautiful hilltop town of Bandipur. Often called a natural viewpoint tower of Nepal, Bandipur offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Annapurna Range, as well as of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Langtang peaks.

Upon arrival in Bandipur, we check into the accommodation.

  • Accomodation: 3 * Hotel
  • Meals: Breafast and Dinner
Day 11 : Bandipur - Kathmandu (145 KM | 5-6 Hrs)

After breakfast, we begin the last riding day of the expedition with a smooth and memorable Bandipur adventure ride. Today’s Bandipur touring route takes us from peaceful hilltop landscapes back towards the vibrant heart of Nepal.

Leaving Bandipur, we descend towards the main highway and pass through the outskirts of Pokhara. The road here is a mix of winding curves, river-side stretches, and open straight sections. Soon we reach Mugling, a busy highway town located at the junction of major trade routes. From here, instead of turning south, we continue riding along the main highway that leads directly towards Kathmandu.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Kathmandu and check into the accommodation. After parking the Motorcycles, there’s time to relax, freshen up, and explore the city on your own.

In the evening, we officially conclude the ride by bidding farewell to the fellow riders. This is your moment to celebrate the successful completion of the Nepal motorcycle expedition, share stories, and reflect on the memories created along the way.
