Today, we'll be riding deep into the heart of Meghalaya, literally and figuratively. The day starts early, we will grab a quick maggie and will leave for an adventurous trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge. This trek is not for the faint of heart—it’s a five-hour journey through thick forests, nearly 3,500 steps. But trust us every step is worth it.
The Double Decker Living Root Bridge is a sight to behold—a 500 year old marvel, crafted by generations of Khasi villagers. Take a moment to feel the serenity of the bridge with the gentle sound of water flowing beneath the bridge and the dense jungle all around.
After the trek, we’ll head to explore the mysterious Arwah Caves cave, which is renowned for its rich limestone formations and an abundance of fossils that date back millions of years, making it a unique destination for both nature and history enthusiasts.
Now we’ll head to Nohkalikai Falls, India’s highest plunge waterfall. As you stand on the edge, looking down at the falls, you’ll hear the tragic tale of Nohkalikai. The fall is named after a local woman named Likai. According to legend, Likai jumped off the cliff after discovering that her 2nd husband had fed her the flesh of her own daughter. The name "Nohkalikai" translates to "Leap of Likai”.
The day wraps up with a visit to the Mawsmai Caves before returning to your hotel in Cherrapunjee, tired but exhilarated.
