Key Riding Guidance & Highlights
Many of the most spectacular places you'll ride — Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Umling La, parts of Spiti — sit in sensitive border zones that require an Inner Line Permit (ILP). On our tours we arrange these for you, but every rider should understand how they work.
The essentials
- ILPs are mandatory for restricted areas and are checked at army and police posts
- Foreign nationals and Indian citizens follow different application processes — we handle both
- Always carry your original passport/ID plus printed copies; officials often keep a copy at each check post
The 48-hour rule
This is the one that catches people out. Certain high passes — Chang La is the key example — enforce a strict permit validity window, effectively 48 hours. Our itineraries are sequenced specifically to respect these windows, which is exactly why the order of days on a Ladakh tour isn't arbitrary.
Our tip: Keep your documents in a waterproof pouch in your jacket during your Ladakh Motorcycle Tour, not buried in the van. You'll need them at short notice, repeatedly.
