In the connected world it's easy to assume you can tap a card or scan a UPI code anywhere. In the high Himalayas, that assumption strands riders. When the network drops — which is often — cash is the only thing that works.
The reality
- Card machines and UPI depend on internet that frequently isn't there
- ATMs in the mountains run dry, break, or simply don't exist for long stretches
- Small villages, homestays and tea stalls are cash-only, full stop
What to do
- Withdraw enough cash in the hub towns — Leh, Manali, Srinagar, Kaza — before heading remote
- Split your cash across two or three places (jacket, day-bag, van bag), never one wallet
- Keep a stock of small notes for chai, tips, and village stops where change is scarce
